Many people believe that New York is where cheesecake first appeared, but it has a much longer history.
The earliest recorded cheesecake was made by the ancient Greeks on the island of Samos in the fifth century BC, more than 4,000 years ago. The basic ingredients for this cheesecake were fresh cheese patties that were smoothed out with flour and honey. The finished product was then baked on an earthenware griddle so that everyone may enjoy it. Cheesecake was provided to athletes during the first Olympic Games in 776 BC since it was thought to be a great source of energy at the time. Furthermore, common as a wedding dessert was cheesecake!
Cheesecake underwent a transformation in the late medieval era in Europe, adding a pastry base in the shape of a tart. Several versions of the cheesecake recipe were included in the first English cookbook, which was written around 1390.
